In a control room, the LED wall is one of the most important elements for operational supervision, data visualization, and real-time decision support.
The main purpose of the LED wall is to ensure all operators have an easy view of the data or content displayed on it, such as monitoring railway traffic, industrial processes, or critical infrastructure.
Indoor LED Walls
Since this is a control room, we are naturally referring to indoor LED walls. These differ from outdoor models in terms of pixel pitch (the distance between individual pixels), brightness, and, of course, size*.

Regulations and Standards for Control Room LED Walls
Naturally, to ensure high operational efficiency, there are regulations and standards that dictate how an LED wall should be positioned within a control room, as well as its brightness, pixel pitch, etc.
One of these is the ISO 11064 standard, which represents the main international reference for the ergonomic design of control rooms.
Regarding LED walls, this standard provides guidelines on:
- Screen positioning (e.g., avoiding glare from windows or lights)
- Optimal viewing angles (gaze directed slightly downward)
- Operating distances (which vary based on resolution, pixel pitch, and the information displayed on the LED wall)
- Reduction of eye strain (the LED wall must be neither too bright nor too dim).
The goal is to ensure that operators can view information clearly and continuously during extended shifts.
Pixel Pitch: The Key Factor to Consider
One of the most important factors to consider in an LED wall is the pixel pitch, which varies based on the display’s requirements. It ranges from a maximum of 40mm (used for very large advertising billboards) to a minimum of 0.6mm (used for LED walls viewed very closely by the operator).
The pixel pitch must be carefully considered during installation, as it determines the type of content that can be clearly read on the screen.
For modern control rooms, the general recommendation is 0.9 to 1.2mm for close viewing distances, 1.2 to 1.5mm for standard control rooms, and 1.5 to 1.8mm for longer viewing distances.
LED Wall Brightness
A second highly important element in a control room LED wall is brightness. Given that an LED wall achieves higher brightness levels than a traditional monitor-based video wall, it is important to calibrate it so that operators’ eyes do not become fatigued.
For this reason, it is recommended to use between 500 and 800 nits for control rooms, as they are well-lit indoor environments. If the LED wall were outdoors, for example, it would need to be much brighter to remain readable.
The implementation of an LED wall for a control room requires a combination of ergonomics and effective management of information. This is exactly why it is important to follow standards (such as ISO 11064) and accurately calculate factors like pixel pitch, positioning, and lighting.
